Chair Yoga – Safe, Supported Yoga for Every Stage of Life

Some people think that yoga requires you to bend yourself like a pretzel, but at Cove Yoga, our Yoga Classes are designed for bodies that need kindness. Chair Yoga helps make yoga accessible for every body, regardless of age, medical history or fitness level. If stiffness, aches, injury, lack of confidence or fear of falling have stopped you from exercising, these classes offer a gentle, supported and fun way to start moving again.

Gentle Chair Yoga for Seniors & Real Bodies

Whilst chair yoga is suitable for any age group, it is one of the most accessible and popular forms of exercise for seniors and for good reason. Movements are slow, controlled, and adaptable, using a chair for support, balance, and confidence.

Improving Strength and Mobility

Each Chair Yoga session is thoughtfully designed to help you rebuild strength, mobility, and balance safely and gradually. Every class meets you exactly where you are. You move at your own pace, choose what feels comfortable, and are always encouraged to listen to your body and do only what feels right for you on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions – Chair Yoga

What should I wear to a Chair Yoga class?

There’s no need for any fancy gear, we recommend wearing

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (like tracksuits, leggings, or a stretchy t-shirt) that allows you to move your arms and legs freely.
  • Layered tops so you can stay warm or cool down as we move.
  • Footwear: We recommend practicing bare feet or “grippy” non-slip socks for stability. However, if you prefer to keep your shoes on for support, that’s fine too.

I’ve never done yoga before, is that ok?

Absolutely. Most people start Chair Yoga with no previous yoga experience at all.  Our classes are designed for all levels and there will be plenty of demonstrations.  We move at a steady, gentle pace, and Colette will explain every movement clearly, so you’ll always feel at home.

What if I have medical conditions?

Many people who attend our classes live with one or more medical conditions, including hip or knee replacements, bursitis, arthritis, heart issues and neurological conditions. Chair Yoga is generally considered gentle and safe; however we ask that you speak with your doctor before starting if you have any health concerns.

Is the class strenuous?

Chair Yoga is gentle and low impact. You choose your level of participation and can rest at any time.

I’m not flexible or fit, can I still participate?

Yes! This is the number 1 reason to come to Chair Yoga. You don’t need to be flexible to start; but as you practice yoga, you will become more flexible. Because we use the chair throughout the class, you don’t have to worry about your balance or getting down on the floor.

What Age Group is Chair Yoga for?

There is no age limit. Whilst Chair Yoga is very popular with seniors, we have a broad age range of people in our classes ranging from mid-forties through to late eighties and early nineties.

What are the Chair Yoga instructors' qualifications?

Colette Chorley a fully Certified Yoga Teacher with a passion for Chair and Seniors Yoga. She has undertaken certifications in chair yoga and is trained in senior-specific physiology and common conditions like Osteoporosis and Arthritis. Colette is experienced in creating a supportive, non-competitive environment and is a First Aider.

What if there is a movement I simply cannot do?

That is perfectly fine. In Chair Yoga, we focus on the intent of the movement and can adapt the exercises to suit a range of different levels. If a specific stretch doesn’t feel right for your body, then it’s perfectly OK to take a “mindful rest” until the next sequence. We encourage everyone to listen to their own body and only do what feels right for you on the day.

Do I need to bring my own chair or equipment?

No. We provide chairs and any props (like straps or blocks) we might use. We just recommend bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Is there parking available at the Hallett Cove Library (Cove Civic Centre)?

Yes. We have chosen our location specifically for its accessibility. There is ample parking right near the entrance, so you won’t have a long or difficult walk to get to class.
